2209 load for 215 Hybrid / 210 VLD ?

Post by Josh Cox »

Hi everyone,

Am looking to test some loads using 2209 and 215 Hybrid / 210 VLDs, in standard Lapua brass with large rifle primers.

What suggested powder loads and roughly what velocity would I expect ? ( Kreiger 1:10, 300/308, 32 inches )

Thanks in advance.

Josh, this is all dependant on your throat length and how much available case you have.

With 200's I was running 48.5 of 09 for 2650-2700ish and what I considered slow speeds, to slow to bother with a lighter pill was beneficial.

Most folks have turned away from 215's, talk to Tim L or Mark F.

If you want a differing opinion on things overall, send me a PM and we can have a chat, I'll send you my Ph No. if you do.

If you are moving to FTR lets set you on the right path early.

thanks Jason,

I have a long throat, will safely take up to 230s.

48-50 grains was suggested, 50 sounds a bit high to me.

There would have to be some serious compression to get even 48 grains in a Lapua case and hold a projectile in the case neck.

Josh I run .308 freebore and tungsten coated bullets in palmer brass through a 30" of Maddco 1:10, too many variations to your rig, so not sure I can be of much help but 50.5gn of 2209 behind the 215 gives me 2680fps and a nice smooth recoil.

I was running 48.2gr of 09 with a 210jlk using palma cases. I ran up to 49gr compressed with this load and had no pressure signs at all. I don't know if I had a slow batch, but I don't think I could have fitted enough 09 in the case to cause me pressure issues. What I did find with that batch of 09 is my velocity spread was considerably higher than what I found when using 2208. I went to the 200 hybrid pill and haven't looked back.

I run 46.7-47 of 2208 with moly coated bullets to get around 2680fps in 3 barrels and all are very accurate. I use Tim's load for the other barrel (50.5 2209). If you push 215's too hard the node is too sharp and you will get burned ie loosing the node too often. Nice and gentle lower loads and the node is wider.

My load for 215Hybrid is 43.4gr of 2208 ,the 5 shots groups are constant of 0.3MOA ,the best was 0.24MOA,SD is 5 or better,ES is around 12,MV is 2565-2570.The barrel length is 30in with 10 twist. All tests are at 200m.
