ummm actually i just did some calculations and 4500 joules (3300ft/lbs) is WAY low, I am glad I dont have to shoot there ! The limit in Qld and Bendigo is, i think 4750 joules (3500 ft/lbs) AND the general limit at NSW ranges is 5675 joules (4182 ft/lbs).
So my next 300 wsm with 230gr pills at 2700 say,, from a 27in barrel, if it works out, is about 5000 joules. no good for the restricted ranges but fine for most rural ranges and match rifle meets.
A saum is ok for 4750 joules but for 4500 ?? I would run a 284 i think. You are right you would need to load down a saum to fit the profile...
